This is such a deeply moving piece. Your parents both sounded like fascinating humans, as are you. Your mother lives on in you.

I followed you because your writing shines so brightly, with that clear clean ring of truth that I've learned to treasure over the years. I had no idea who your father was till now.

A famous parent casts a long shadow. A few understand that and work to mitigate it but most, alas, don't.

PS Your mother was so right about nightly moisturising.

Thanks so much for your kind words about the writing, Jennie. I very rarely talk about my dad's work, but you are right, it casts a long shadow, and often bleeds into pieces before I notice it.

Many write in their own authentic voice which is itself commendable.

That they have little to say of any substance or depth is unfortunate, because rest assured, there is more of not much where that came from.

What a refreshing delight to discover an original voice that is entertaining, informative, and deeply satisfying to read. Time spent well with no regrets.

You write in an authentic honest style that is uniquely your own. There is a certain bite to your frank unvarnished truth telling, redolent of nicotine and a shot of good whiskey.

The perfectly aged wisdom of an observant, curious mind, gifted with a flair for observational relevance, and a knack for good storytelling.

I loved this piece and how poignantly you wrote about loving and losing your complicated mother. I gotta admit - that last paragraph brought me to tears.
